The transportation of tracked special equipment is a task that requires not only powerful vehicles but also legal compliance. Planning errors can lead to machine damage, delays, and serious fines. This is especially true for heavy excavators, bulldozers, and road machines, for which there are strict requirements for transportation on public roads.

Why tracked equipment cannot be transported on its own

Tracked equipment is not designed for movement on asphalt roads. Tracks destroy the pavement, and the machine itself often exceeds permissible dimensions and weight. Therefore, by law, such machines must be transported on low-bed trailers or lowboy semi-trailers.

The design of a tracked excavator involves a massive undercarriage and uneven weight distribution. This makes transportation without a specialized trailer dangerous — especially on uneven roads or during sharp turns.

Regulatory requirements and permits

The following rules apply to the transportation of oversized or heavy equipment in Ukraine:

  • Dimensions without a permit: width up to 2.6 m, height up to 4 m, length up to 22 m, weight up to 40 tons.
  • If these parameters are exceeded, a special permit from Ukravtodor (State Agency of Motor Roads) or the National Police is required.
  • Escort: if the width of the equipment exceeds 3.5 m or the weight exceeds 60 tons, an escort vehicle is necessary.

Non-compliance with these rules entails a fine of 8,500 to 17,000 UAH, and for a repeated violation — up to 34,000 UAH and detention of the vehicle until the violations are corrected.

Preparing the equipment for transport

Before transportation begins, a number of procedures must be carried out:

  1. Cleaning the equipment. Tracks and the lower part of the chassis must be cleaned of soil to avoid damaging the road surface and exceeding the permissible weight.
  2. Draining fluids. It is often required to partially drain fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluids to reduce the overall weight.
  3. Securing movable elements. Buckets, booms, blades, and cabs must be fixed in a safe position.
  4. Using securing devices. Certified chains, straps, and chocks are used to prevent shifting during movement.

Transport and logistics: what to choose

The following are most often used for transporting tracked equipment:

  • Low-bed trailers (platforms) — optimal for excavators and bulldozers.
  • Telescopic trailers — for long-length equipment.
  • Platforms with a reinforced frame — for machines weighing over 50 tons.

When choosing a carrier, pay attention to the availability of a license, insurance coverage, and experience in transporting similar machines.

Safety hacks for transportation

  • Plan the route in advance: avoid bridges with weight restrictions and narrow sections.
  • Check weather conditions: rain or ice increases the risk of load shifting.
  • Coordinate entry and unloading with the site owner — especially in limited space.
  • Take photos and videos of the equipment’s condition before transportation — this will help in disputes with the insurer.

Why it is important to trust professionals

The transportation of tracked equipment is not just logistics, but a part of the operational cycle. An error in securing or choosing a platform can lead to deformation of the undercarriage, hydraulics, and violation of the frame geometry. Therefore, it is more profitable to entrust this process to specialists who consider all technical and legal nuances.
